The "digital" world always existed since the human world did and together they existed as mirror worlds, the events of a world influencing the other world. It was not always called that way. It bore different names as the human society progressed: the Spirit World, the Heaven/Hell/Purgatory, the astral, the Another Dimension, until finally settling on "Digital World. Both worlds intertwined, attracted one to another, so opposite yet so alike, as two halves of one, but with a thin barrier to keep them separated. A barrier that sometimes was breached.
At first as if imitating the human world, many prehistoric digimon were born from primitive data and eventually when creatures capable of intelligence appeared in the human world AKA the humans, the digital world drew from their dreams and imagination the shape, form and beliefs of the many digimon that exists, becoming the animals of old human legends.
First none-dinosaur digimon were born from dreams of humans, because during dreams a mind can create beings unimaginable, mixing unmistakable, it can create a world where 2+2 equals cake. Human dreams created new digimon, who shook the dominance of dinosaurs in the digital world, without requiring a meteor to hit them. It would be proposed only thousands of years later by a bunch of philosophers that our thoughts, our dreams can actually materialize themselves.
Both worlds evolved together, keeping close links to each other. Digimon that broke the barrier and ventured into human world spurred the myths about them, and in return, humans, who developed such stories, shaped digimon in their own world, without knowing it. Digimon shaped myths, and myth shaped digimon, in a weird kind of ... symbiosis? But links worked both ways, and if digimon were able to travel into our world, so could we.
Indeed, those were so close each other that sometimes rifts between dimension caused digimon to appear in the human world and humans to appear in the digital world. Many digimon then went to create more legends as they were mistaken for unknown creatures of the legends like dragons, witches and even UFOS while those humans who went to the digital world become legendary beings who taught the primitive digimon about human culture and introduced things like warfare with regular weapons and later with firearms.
Examples of such linked fate between worlds were the tales of pharaomon, who mistaken for the revived form on an ancient pharaoh, become the greatest leader of the ancient Egyptian empire and devised the methods to create the pyramids and many monuments who couldn't be made by the humans of the period. And in the digital world some of the humans who arrived there become legendary leaders like the great Chinese general who lead an army of digimon to victory against their oppressors and even until now, that part of the digital world fashions itself with a very Chinese architecture and culture.
At first this mutual feedback between worlds was relatively stable and the rifts between words were merely natural phenomena with a very low rate of appearance, but when mankind entered in the digital era, their excessive reliance on digital technology started to weaken more and more the thin barrier between worlds and the rifts between worlds become more frequent, causing in the worst cases grouped cases of disappearances and the reports of mysterious creatures (digimon) appearing increased.
The invention and development of world-wide webs, computers and whatnot was a major breakthrough not only from technological point of view, it was a breakthrough in erasing the thin barrier that existed only for like ... forever? A huge network, where all human knowledge is stored, the thing that could be the face of humanity itself, a very new world, virtual world. It landed a huge impact on the Digital, now called Digital world, an event so tremendous it could be matched with a crash of a comet in impact. Within two decades, the digital world and its inhabitants evolved at a rate much faster than normal, making a huge leap. New continents were formed, many new, known creatures that were born of this Klondike of human knowledge and imagination, and went to inhabit this old, yet so new world. Old notions crumbled, it was time to make room for the new generation.
But were both world ready for such a boost in growth? Maybe, maybe not... Nobody had foreseen this coming, and digital world soon went into chaos. That is, in chaos were the newly-founded regions. Those that kept under old rule, were relatively structured, keeping to traditions, and often fending off the anarchic digimon who were product of human civilization growth. The situation in both worlds was getting out of control and both digimon and humans alike separately tried to save their respective worlds, unaware that no world could exist without the other and the most drastic measures could spell doom for both species.
And that was only the beginning ...
