" ... *yawns*, It's morning already?"
Manabi was the first one to wake up and the first thing she did was to stretch her arms and legs, she was feeling her body a bit numb after the non stop activity and the muscular finally was taking its toll on her non athletic body. She saw below her and found the impmon still sleeping quietly, that silly little devil once more tried to be cool and remained awaken for some more hours and now he was sleeping more to compensate for the lost sleep hours. The girl simply smiled and found funny how cute and inoffensive he looked when he slept and went next to the door leading outside, knocking it before speaking.
"Soren, are you there? We can continue now"
This time they had to leave the desert, after all the kilometers they walked yesterday, she hoped they were finally close to the exit. Until the renamon answered her call, she simply supported herself on a wall and waited, she was going to wake up the sleeping impmon as soon she received a reply from the fox digimon

- I'm here. - Voice came from above. The fox got bored of endless circling around the hut a long time ago, and was now sitting on top of the roof of the house like a sentinel, the lance he created yesterday. It was not that hard to sustain it in one piece, but it was a great pole to lean on to when you feel too bored to stand on your own two feet. Standing up from his comfy surveillance spot, the renamon jumped from the roof, landing near the entrance, and quietly opened the door.
- The tiny guy still asleep? Well, it's his fault he did not go to sleep immediately, and instead stared at you for a couple of hours. - the renamon laughed, closing his mouth with his hand, and peered inside the hut. The impmon was still sleeping, snoring quietly. But the girl did have a point - they had to be going now, and the shrimp's excuse for still being tired was not accounted for.
- Me thinks he likes you. - the renamon laughed again quietly. To him the very idea was ... amusing. She was a human after all, not a digimon. And ... well, the very idea sounded so very foreign to him.

"Thank goodness, we would be lost without you"
After spending two entire days in the desert, Manabi learned to understand that the only one reliable here was that fox-thing named Soren, so far thanks to him they avoided all kinds of danger and now she was willing to follows all his orders as long he took them outside this land of the damned. Had he disappeared during the night ... she would've gone crazy as the impmon while faithful, was kinda useless in the desert.
No sooner he answered, the renamon opened the door and went inside to check the status of his customers: Indeed, the impmon was still sleeping, but not for the reason the renamon mentioned, the meanie always making fun of him and Manabi believing him ....
"WHAT!?"
She felt ... disgusted by the idea of the impmon spending most of the day looking at her with those devilish eyes and grinning with that sly smile of his, and her disgust grow only bigger when me mentioned that the impmon liked her in ways that weren't normal, she was a human and he a devil-thing!
"WAKE UP, IT'S TIME TO LEAVE!"
Offended by what Soren said, she went near Irmgard and shouted next to him as she kicked some sand on his face.
"*coff, coff* What's happening?"
"Sleepy prince, we are leaving, and I know what you were doing at night, I'm never letting you sleep with me again!"
"W-wait! It didn't do anything ..."
Alas, his words reached dear ears, the girl simply left outside along the desert fox while Irmgard was left behind, still with some sand on his face and completely confused about what happened or why she was angry, he indeed spent part of the night awake, but looking at the door in case something happened, not looking at her.

Soren laughed meanly upon hearing the so very delightful conversation in the hut. Such kind of tricks were his hobby, and he just wasn't able to hold back and not do anything about it. The results were most rewarding, though he maybe had gone a bit too far with his practical jokes... Meh, not that he cared or anything - they would be gone in a matter of hours now, when he will lead them out of the desert, and then he would forget about them, as they surely would.
But really, they should be going - there was only so much left, and he'd be happy to cross that terrain as fast as possible. Then he could get his prize, for helping them, and would return back to his surveillance post, waiting for another lost person he could be coming across. And then the cycle would repeat again... And again... And again... Soren sighed - this was ... monotonous. He did not yet come to the point when all people start looking the same, but when would that time come? What will he do then? The fox decided not to think about that...
They only managed to go, like, a couple of hundred meters away from the hut, when... Something happened. Something ... blocked out the sun, and the trio found themselves in a small shade, which resembled a large bird, or a bat, and was growing in size. The renamon looked up, eyes narrowing from excess of sunlight behind the ... what exactly was that anyway? Surely it wasn't a cloud, there were no clouds in the desert... And soon he heard ominous batting of wings from above. Whatever it was ... it was alive, and Soren might just know what...
- Oh shi--- - he said, his grip tightening around his lance, as he took a few steps back, away from the shade the creature casted. On his face for a brief moment was shown ... fear. If a hardened desert dweller like him would get scared - they were deep in trouble...

"Please, I didn't do anything weird at night!"
"Hmpf ..."
No matter what the impmon tried to say, the girl refused all the time to listen to his empty excuses, why should she forgive her when he spent all the night peeking at her while she slept? That's something only perverts and freaks do! It didn't help at all that Irmgard always was so close to her and often looked at her while they traveled.
As for him, he was completely embarrassed for the situation and knew that was he did could be considered harassment, but that night he did nothing nasty, and he even remained so late only for her! He gave the fox digimon the mean look when he noticed him grinning and laughing for no reason at all, he had to be the culprit!
"Just exactly what did you tell to ..."
Gosh, he had to be interrupted exactly when he wanted to make Soren spit the truth by that nasty ... apparently bird-type digimon who was casting a large shadow on the group. He really wanted to make the renamon spill the beans but that had to wait for another time, right now, judging by the reaction of the renamon, an enemy appeared. Irmgard stepped in front of Manabi and was determined to become her shield even if she rejected him.
"Stay back, this time I don't think Soren can bluff his way out of a fight"
"Y-yes!"
The girl tightly grabbed her cloak and braced herself crouching on the sand, that air current the flying thing was creating was strong enough to knock out of its feet anything small or lightweight like the girl.

The shadow was growing bigger by the moment, but no, it was neither a bird, not a bat, though it had some resemblance. And they would have been luckier if it were some sort of poultry - birds that resemble not human beings at any rate often were feral, and feral creature is predictable - you'd know it would attack. This ... this was not feral at all, and much more sinister... And it had wings...
The mysterious creature then dropped into a nose-dive, approaching the ground at higher speed, as his features became clearer... Jet - black wings, with so many ripped, torn and burned holes in them one might only wonder how on earth those would even be able to allow to fly, they were so very bat-like. And in between that pair of wings ... there was a humanoid-shaped body, sort off. Only with much longer, and jagged limbs... And horns... Oh my...
The devimon wanted to make his descend rather spectacular, and he succeeded in doing so. A little show-offish, but hey, when you're a devimon, you are honor-bound to make such an entrance. Oh, but it was no ordinary devimon, no. He also bore a mark of a criminal upon him. A cross formed of two red stripes, one coming from the head to the stomach, and the second one - from one shoulder to another. However, despite the appearance, he was not here to carry out an assassination order. For nobody here would dare giving orders to Shaitan himself. He came alone, like he always did, when he needed to settle something. If you want something done right, you'll have to do it yourself.
- Soren! - his voice called out, as he hovered in mid-air, gazing down upon the two digimon and a frightened human. - We meet again... And ... under the same circumstances as well... - Shaitain frowned. He clearly did not like what he saw...

- Shaitan! - Soren called back, as he heard his own name called, and the silhouette of the creature became more visible. He pointed his spear at the flying devil, as he held ground, and braced against the incoming gusts of wind, which kicked sand in his eyes and twisted his cloak in the air. When Manami called the Impmon "devilish creature, she did not quite know the meaning of that word. Impmon was a cute, if somewhat mischievous, little imp. This ... was THE DEVIL. Almost twice the size of Soren, who was a rather tall fox, with wings big enough to compete with huge bird digimon, and the general appearance quite intimidating. Those red eyes... those crimson claws... And that mark of the damned.
Scared yet? Shaitan indeed was quite frightening, and for good reason. He was, after all, the leader of the desert bandits. But they followed him for reasons other than fright or malice. Soren knew him, to a degree, and he knew that was a fact. The desert dwellers followed him because, first of all, he was a leader. And secondly - because of his mark. The one Soren bore was hated and feared. The one the devil had ... was respected. These were drawn upon those ... who hid the exiles, and helped them out...
- So, since your goons failed to do your dirty work for you, you decided to come yourself? - the renamon tossed with anger in his voice, the sharp end of the spear still pointed at the flying devil, even if he were out of reach. Internally, Soren prepared himself for a fight. He did meet the devimon before. That time ... the matter was resolved peacefully. However, the fox feared this time the lord of the damned was serious...

"A devimon!"
The impmon said as he started to tremble a little. Devimon were some of the strongest adult/champion level digimon in existence, some of them being on par with perfect/ultimate ones. What's more, they were not only strong but also cunning and depending the digimon, they could be extremely cruel or simply mean, Irmgard hoped this was of the simply mean type, because if this were really evil ... not even the combined might of Soren and himself would be a match for the devil-type digimon
"Devil-mon? He really looks like a demon ... stay away from me!"
Oh poor Manabi, she always called the impmon a devil but now she was looking at a real one, the difference was more than obvious and if impmon looked like a small mischievous devil, devimon looked like the kind of monsters that appears only in nightmares. Now she really regretted calling Irmgard a devil, he was just a little imp and one not evil to boot.
The impmon mustered as much courage as possible and stopped trembling to show some courage, the human girl would crack under the pressure if she saw those battle-capable wetting their pants so he had to at least feign bravery despite he was very afraid of the devil digimon.
"Please let us leave, we have nothing you could want and we need Soren's help to abandon the desert"
Yes ... it was better not to provoke the devimon, he humbly begged him to let them leave with no harm this arid zone for they lacked anything a devimon could need.

The devimon gazed down upon the trio as he heard an array of replies. He ignored the two that were obviously Soren's "clientèle", his quarrel was with the renamon and him alone. Those two were merely bystanders, he had no business with them. He expected hostile reaction from the latter though - they went through it several times in the past already, and this ... well, this was the last straw before he would take more decisive action.
- Goons? Please. Those three newcomers? - the devimon asked and laughed. His laugh was not a very kind one, but with him being a devimon, that was really no surprise. - Those three idiots came to our oasis more than a week ago, and from the beginning started abusing my hospitality by poking their noses into affairs that did not concern them. So I gave them a task I knew they would never perform, to cool down their attitude and teach them humiliation. The lesson was learned, I believe. - an explanation came around. What Soren and the two behind him saw yesterday was only ... a disciplinary action, in an unorthodox way. The devimon laughed again, however, it was pretty obvious he did not come here for a laugher.
- Sending goons is not how I roll, however. When I have a bone to pick with someone, I come personally. That is why I am here. - the devimon's laughter ended on a grim warning very abruptly, as his eyes started glowing in bloody-red, and a strong bat of his wings raised even more dust and sand into air. Even from the tone one might figure he was not joking.
- Abandon the desert? Hnh, that is precisely the problem. You, Soren, keep guiding the people that pass around ambushes my men lay. You refused to join our society as well. You set people against yourself. You ignored warnings I gave you. And your actions are undermining our dwindling supplies we manage to get from these raids. I came here to put an end to this once and for all, I will not tolerate on close my eyes on it any longer. - the devimon's tone became somewhat accusing and ... self-righteous? In any case, he had spoken with ultimateness, it was obvious his patience about this ... defiance was at an end, and he would do something about this...

- Well sorry I outsmarted a bunch of your raiders for a living.
Jeez, Shaitan sounded really pissed off now, and judging by how he looked he was not afraid to use force to "end this problem once and for all". Soren covered his eves with his hand when another gust of wind send a handful of sand at him. The damn thing was powerful, but the renamon would still not lose his spunk. To show cowardice was the last thing to do, when facing any opponent. Especially the one that preyed upon your fears.
- Oh yeah? Whacha gonna do, kill me? - he may have sounded like he was tempting fate by talking to the flying bastard, and in such a tone too, but in fact he just tried to win a little more time. After all, if he were here alone, he would not worry much, but there were two more people beside him who needed to get out of here. His brain was feverishly looking for a way out of this predicament, which was possible to see by the way his eyes moved from one spot to another, and a drop of sweat appearing near his temple... What to do right now ... he just didn't know.

"Can we solve this peacefully?"
The impmon tried to act as a mediator between two desert dwellers. For what he understood, this devimon was the leader of the bandits and assaulted any stranger who had the bad luck of wandering into the barren desert and only did it to procure supplies for his men. Alas, by doing that, he condemned his victims to slowly die charred by the sun and frozen by the night until their data shattered and returned to the primary village as digieggs. His intentions might be ... morally ambiguous at best, but his methods were outright evil.
"Look, we can give you half of the supplies we have right now, but please let us leave without a battle, we need them to survive the travel out of the desert and at least must keep half of our current goods"
This was a loss-loss situation, so as much he could negotiate how much they were going to lose. Irmgard hoped the devimon had some heart to listen to their pleas and accept the proposal, because otherwise he would have to end up fighting against him and a mere impmon was no match for a devimon. It was that or die in the desert due lack of supplies.

- Kill you? Maybe. I'd like to avoid that if possible. I got exiled here like the rest because I helped the exiles when everybody did exactly the opposite. And I would like to avoid spilling blood of a fellow exile, even ... even the one as wretched as you are. I care naught for the outsiders. - the devimon's voice announced. And indeed, he felt great hate towards those who sentenced him, as well as the rest of his clan. It was funny that he was now going to cast punishment on one who defended the poor travelers, just like he was punished for that in the past.
- I will give you a choice. Either you stop sabotaging my raids, or you die. - the devil sounded like he will not go for compromises. He ignored the words little impmon said, for it was a matter between him and the desert fox, and that matter was not about the puny amount of supplies these particular people carried, it was about the whole raiding deal in general. It was the main source of income, and the renamon was like a thorn in his side.
- Well I ain't joining your bunch of pillagers. I already have a murder to atone for, and I am not going to add more to the count. This guiding business is the only way I can earn for a living without requiring to raid and pillage. If I cease doing that, how do you expect me to survive here? - Soren asked. Indeed, this was his "job" of sorts. He earned stuff from the people he guided, and that was how he survived. His way was "legal", as much legal as it could get in a desert like this.
- I don't care how you're going to survive. If you can't - leave the desert. Or perish. - the devimon sounded merciless. But his proposal ... it put Soren into a state of shock for a second. Leave? Was he ... was he going to throw him away out of the desert? That was impossible! He's an exile! Outside people who see his mark have the right to destroy him on sight. He'd never go there. Ever.
- Leave? No ... no way man! I can't leave! I'm an exile, I'll get torn apart outside. No. - the confusing dialogue continued...

"Umm ... mister devil, why don't you work as a guide too? You can still earn supplies and work along Soren"
The human girl shyly said as she covered herself behind Irmgard. At least for her made sense that if the devimon was not a malicious one and cared for other exiles, he could easily earn more being a guide than as a bandit, there would be no risk of deletion and more people other than desperate travelers with no other choice would dare to travel through the desert. Hell, maybe it could even become a touristic location. So many possibilities if only the bandits decided to become nice .... and of course, she was ignoring the part about being feared for their marks because she still hadn't realized how those marks deemed them worthless digimon.
"The desert needs of somebody like Soren. We would've died were not for his help, I hope we can reach an agreement that doesn't involve bloodshed and can benefit both parties, and I think like her, much more potential customers would come here if only all of you worked as guides or offered for a price shelter"

- Enough! - the devimon's voice thundered through the air, overwhelming. He was tired from all this non-consequential blabbering. The renamon he came to deal with refused to stop, and the two travelers' ideas were impossible to implement here. They failed to realize that the desert is a prison, and they, the inhabitants of this place, were the scum of the world, literally. They would never do peaceful trade with outsiders, as well as no one would do trade with them.
- You two do not understand squat to have any word here. This desert is a prison. All criminals that aren't executed are sent here. We are them. These marks on our bodies tell of our sins. We will not trade with outsiders, we will loot them and then leave them to die in the desert just like they left us. And you, Soren, refuse to leave, then you shall ... DIE. - the devimon exclaimed, and launched a dark energy attack at the fox below...
Soren figured how this was going to end when the demon started talking again. Shaitan simply got tired of looking for compromises, and decided to solve the dispute the fastest way he knew how. Well. This was bad, and the renamon did not think of any way on how to escape this. So ... he had no other choice, he figured that much when the demon launched the dark orb at him. The renamon countered with throwing his crystal lance at the orb, the two projectiles clashing between each other and exploding midair.
- Run you two! - Soren called, pointing at the direction, where the two should go. This was his fight after all, the devimon was after him. And none of the variants he proposed was adequate - ceasing guiding was slow death from malnutrition, and leaving the desert - deletion at the hands of anybody who would notice his marks. So ... he did not have much to lose. And the direction he pointed at ... there were some mountains to be seen from afar as a landmark, there the desert ended... They could reach it on their own...

The situation ended with the possible outcome and now only battle could be used to solve the differences between the desert digimon. Shaitan was a powerful devil digimon a level above Soren, who was a fox digimon in great disadvantage. Clearly the odds were in favor of the devimon and only a miracle could save the renamon were he to face his foe in a one VS one battle.
"We can't leave him behind!"
The determined impmon said as he tossed a few fireballs at the devimon. He was aware that against desert digimon who endured infernal temperatures his purely fire-based attack would be a lot less effective than against normal digimon, but every bit of damage helped and he wanted to repay their debt to the fox digimon. He didn't like his attitude, but there was no doubt that deep down Soren was a great guy who didn't deserve to die here and now.
"I ... I can't run away, not without a bodyguard and a guide!"
Indeed, she was at mercy of any other digimon if she tried to escape while those two were fighting, so even if she wanted, it was a terrible choice to try to leave alone. Besides, while she was completely useless, she really wanted to help in one way or another that renamon that protected them during those two days and half they were in this desert. Meanwhile, that strange device that appeared before and now was inside her pocket started to shine thanks to their pair's shared desire to help Soren, soon it was going to arrive the time for its power to be unleashed ...
